James Bieryla, Deputy Director of AFWERX, Department of the Air Force

James Bieryla is the Deputy Director of AFWERX. AFWERX转换敏捷, affordable and accelerated capabilities by teaming innovative technology developers with Airmen and Guardian talent. AFWERX is the innovation arm of the Department of the Air Force and works to accelerate agile and affordable capability transitions by teaming innovative technology developers with Airman and Guardian talent. The three core arms of AFWERX - AFVentures, Spark and Prime - serve to expand the defense industrial base for advanced technologies, empower Airmen and Guardian talent, and drive faster technology transition to operational capability. AFWERX teams internationally across academia, industry and government to develop technology, 扩大人才, and transition dual-use capabilities.

Mr. Bieryla is a former United States Air Force fighter pilot and test pilot, having flown almost 3000 hours in the F-15, F-117, F-22, F-16, 还有其他35架飞机. Following his retirement from active duty, he transitioned to the Air Force 研究 Laboratory where he led classified technology development efforts. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy as well as Masters 学位s from both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the Air Force Institute of 技术.

Entrepreneurs and Innovators are described in origin myths as solitary actors, driven by a unique creative spirit and sheer grit and personality. The truth is that innovations happens within networks and systems in which individuals and firms create and generate new ideas, 概念和业务. Bursts of innovation in particular regions such a Silicon Valley in the 1960s and 1990s, represent a confluence of factors including capital, 技能与天赋, regulatory frameworks and legal resources. The 2023 PILT Seminar brings together actors in academia, practice and the arenas of government, universities and the military to examine how actors in these innovation systems, especially in Central and Southwest 俄亥俄州 can play a role in supporting a regional innovation system.
